2006 New Chairman: Umar at the helm! PDF Print E-mail
A Ugandan who came to Rossendale as a refugee when he was two years old has become chairman of Rossendale Round Table. Umar Memon arrived in Rossendale in 1972 and lived with his family in Edgeside. He has stayed in and around the area all his life, training as a chartered accountant.

He said: ‘My aim this year is to help promote community awareness in Rossendale via Round Table.’ And his first community event as chairman was a curry night at Haslingden Cricket Club when around 70 guests dined on a variety of curries. Two of the dishes were specially prepared by Umar’s wife Almas and outgoing chairman Anil Joshi’s wife Jan.

The event raised more than £850, which is being sent to St Stephen’s Orphanage in Nairobi after Umar visited the country last Christmas. He said: ‘It is supported by the Nairobi Round Table and has 40 children. ‘Their biggest need is food and we raised enough from the curry night to feed the children for two months.
